Confusion, upheaval, and wastefulness for the Yuba Community College District, including the Lake County Campus, is being sown in the form of SB 226, which flew through the State Senate and is now headed to the State Assembly. It would empower the governor-appointed Community College Board of Governors to unilaterally impose boundary changes on local community colleges districts regardless of opposition by the locally elected college governing boards.
The intended objective of this legislation is a transfer of the Yuba Community College area around Woodland to the Los Rios Community College District. This would result in huge costs to the districts, and consume enormous administrative resources, which are desperately needed to fulfill the mission of community colleges: to serve students’ educational needs and the economic development needs of our communities, including at the Lake County Campus of Woodland Community College. SB 226 will go to the education committee in the Assembly next. I urge calls and letters of opposition to SB 226 be sent to Assembly Member Cecilia Aguiar- Curry:
